Yes, democratically elected and he also subverted the subsequent elections which were not legal nor impartial. And he used his powers to benefit his children, wife, sister and brother in law financially. And yet to be seen if the sale of his phone company to SINGAPORE was totally tax free. To which his family benefitted from. This is another reason the government is not tooo happy with Singapore.

They are just playing politics. This was the popular reason for them to use for their coup, so they will need to continue to play to meet the public's expectation, and to remain popular.
