Onmyoji was banned in the 1800s, so many of the practitioners did not pass it on. Of course the ban was lifted, so there are some that exist today, but most are simply Shinto priests. Some claim to still be able to harness the powers of demons, but most people believe they are great legends.

Currently anyone can become an Onmyoji, but onmyoji is not focused on utilizing the powers of inugami or other spirits, it's part of a religion. If you really want to study to be an onmyoji, then you must become Shinto, learn Japanese (in order to understand the teachings), and go to Japan. Shinto priests would know where to go to study this, but if you are not Japanese, then there is no place for you in Shintoism. Shintoism is rooted in the creation of Japan and Japanese nationalism. Non-Japanese are not really included, so they don't convert to it.

As a remark to rabbityama, you don't HAVE to be Japanese to be Shinto. I'm American and I'm Shinto. It's all in what you believe or what fits best for you. Go study up a little before you make a remark as such. It's shameful.

As for training to become an onmyouji, it is based in Shintoism currently however it is very difficult to gain access to the teachers who teach it. It's a very closed world. Best of luck to you.
