My husband and I are having a silly debate over this... I say liquid, because it is mostly water and you do not chew it. he says it's a solid because you can pick it up with a fork.

It's a gel. ;-)

Seriously though -- when a patient goes into the hospital for surgery, the doctor will order patient to be on a liquid-only diet before the surgery. The nurse will tell the patient, "If you can see through it, it's a liquid." Meaning -- jello is liquid, but marinara sauce is not.

I think what you're confusing the words "liquid" and "fluid" ... marinara sauce is fluid if you use this definition of fluid:

A fluid is defined as a substance that continually deforms (flows) under an applied shear stress regardless of the magnitude of the applied stress.

Spaghetti sauce is ladled onto spaghetti- so that makes it a liquid. If it's really GOOD sauce, it has solids- such as mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, olives, meatballs or sausage in it that you chew. So- it's a liquid base with solids in it. You're both right!

Depends on the way it's made. My mom puts loads of beef in it for the meatballs, and it's no longer liquid. the sauce ends up coating the spaghetti and the meatballs, so it's not actually sauce anymore.

Solid only if you cook it too long, and hard to get out of the pot.
