Legally in the United States you cannot get a tattoo until you are 18 years old or the shop can lose its license and have to pay a huge fine and while yes some kids under 18 have tattoos if a shop even considers it with the parents permission they still will not do it under 17 years of age. Not only that but if you think you are old enough for a tattoo at 14 because its cool and you want to show it off and look like a bad *** those are the wrong reasons. A tattoo isnt something to be taken lightly they really are awesome but you need to choose what it is and have it mean something instead of off of a wall at a shop that everyone else and there brother has on them tattoos are unique and shouldnt be copied. So why not sit around and wait find something or come up with something you want and think about it for four years and make sure its something you really want because where you get it can affect future jobs, and it will be there forever and getting a tattoo lasered off of your body hurts. And I do agree with the person who said they probably agreed because a shop wont tattoo you.

I don't know where you live but most reputable shops refuse to tattoo anyone under 16 even with parental permission. Even more shops refuse to allow minors in them at all. I am not saying that you are going to make a bad choice, but the things I wanted as tattoos when I was 14 are definately not what I got at 18, 19, 21 or 23.....as you mature and grow emotionally and mentally you tend to feel differently about these permanant markings. If you don't already have a clear, thought out idea in your mind that holds a lot of meaning and symbolism for you, then don't get a tattoo just because your parents will let you.

If you find a shop that will let you get a tattoo at that age, even with a parent's permission, you're probably getting yourself into more trouble than you can imagine.

In most places, it's illegal to tattoo anyone under the age of 18, and even with a parent's permission, you have to be 16.

If the shop will let you get a tattoo, they probably don't follow many other rules, either... like keeping their place clean and sanitary. So, you might get a nice disease to go along with your cool new tattoo!!

Not to mention the fact that you are definately not done growing at the age of 14, and as you continue to grow, so will your tattoo. So in 3 or 4 years, you're going to be the proud owner of a tattoo that looks like complete CRAP.

Your parents are completely ignorant and stupid for even agreeing to take you there.

Good luck with that. *eye roll*

umm, i think 14 years old is a little too young to get a tattoo...Not just because of your age, but because 4 years from now, when your body has potentially grown all it has, your tattoo will look ugly...sooner. You don't want a nasty looking tattoo when you're 18 do you? If i were you, i'd wait, but if you insist (i'm assuming you're a guy) you could get one on your upper back just below your neck area..that always looks nice on a guy. And as far as ideas...pick something you come up with, not some random picture you like on the internet.

from me, a tattoo artist! yes tattoo shops can tattoo 14 year olds in certain states with a notarized consent form. i have done male and female 14 year olds. didnt agree with it but did it. you are still growing (don't mean to sound like your parents there but its true) you have almost five years of random growth spurts that can and will effect the overall look of your tattoo in time. also, right now in life you have yet to really decide what or who you really are, so picking a permanent piece of art is kind of a bad idea. i know if i would have got my first 20 tattoo ideas, i would regret them all. i still have tattoos i wish i could do over. anyone with tattoos will say the same. do your research, pick a style, find an artist that enjoys and is really good at that style, then collaborate with him/her to design you a custom piece. you will thank me later.

J-bird, I was thinking about getting a tattoo around your age. I would suggest you don't do it even if your parents allow you. I have talked to various people of different ages, some around 25, some younger and others older. They told me they got tattoos to be different, to be a bad a**, etc. Now they say they don't like their tattoo, it is ugly and they wish they never had gotten them.

I would suggest thinking this over. Can you live 80 plus years with this tattoo on your body day and night? Some people are going to think it is unprofessional.

Check the walls of the tattoo shop for ideas. I don't know if an artist will do a 14 yr old even with a parent there.
