Is it just a coincidence or is there actually a relationship?

If one looks at the top three reasons that a great many scholars and historians point to in the collapse/ fall of the Roman empire, the disintegration of it's societal moral values is always there...is this a plausible explanation for what is happening to society in the United States? Is America collapsing like the Roman empire? Are there any eerie parallels between the two (United States and Rome/ Roman empire)?

There could very well be a parallel between the Roman Empire and the United States....however I don't think it can be as easily summed up as to simply define it as "Godlessness". The eeriness may have more to do with the current President and his associations, than the lack of immorality of the people of the U.S.A collectively.

Also....I totally love your Avatar!!!!!

Oh, hey, let's just totally ignore all the misery, starvation, war, and torture that RELIGION has caused over the last few thousand years; and the "holy" wars that are still going on in the world right now (including that big one in Iraq, which our President insists is God-ordained), and the gays killed by Christian bigots, and the Muslims going on screaming, vandalizing rampages over some stupid cartoons, and so on and so on. Religion has never made anyone sane; if anything, the world will be better off without it. So if "godlessness" is on the rise, then I welcome it. People will have one less reason to kill and hate each other.

The Roman Empire started collapsing when Constantine told everyone to be Christian.

We were more full of God during slavery. Was that moral? C

Roman empire feel for a lot of reason. Part of it they were no longer united in a strong ruler. Another they used outsiders to fight there wars. Which means they were not loyal to Rome.

Rome: try inbreeding and lead poisoning.

"Do members of atheist organizations in the US commit more than their fair share of violent crimes? Do the members of the National Academy of Sciences, 93 percent of whom reject the idea of God, lie, cheat and steal with abandon?
According to the UN Human Development report, those among the least religious societies also have the lowest homicide rates."

Depends what you mean by immorality. If you think lynching black men is not OK then things are getting more moral. How the white christians used to like doing that.

With no heart to guide it, any society will eventually crumble. America, fortunately is large enough to where God's presence has, is, and always will be felt on some level. As for eerie parallels... We're also an empire (debate away, but we are). We tolerate just about anything. To answer your question, yes. There's more than a correlation, in fact, it's directly related.

The crime rate over the last 15 years has dropped. To me that's a lot more of a moral victory than the fact that people are having sex outside of marriage.

If America collapses it will be because we traded a president in who had sex outside of marriage for a president who doesn't think outside of the box.

nonsense. the only thing on the increase is the human population. more humans ... more human naughtiness. plus the fact that with modern technology you're made of aware of every nasty business going on around the globe. contrived wars and genocide ... live on the TV.

considering how crowded with extra humans is the planet it's a wonder it's not a whole lot worse. you can't cram a 100 rats in a small cage and expect them to get along, cannibalism is inevitable.

How do you figure that there's a rise of godlessness? All the data I see argues that church attendance is at all time highs. Evangelical Christians arguably swung the election of President Bush.

How do you figure that there's in increase in immorality? My understanding of history is that it was full of immorality.
