Price point? $200-300 get a Canon A640, it takes really nice pictures overall. $400-500 get either the Canon S1 or S2 if you do not want an SLR or get the Nikon D40. $600-700 get the Canon Rebel XTi, its a really nice camera, I highly recommond it. $800-1000 Nikon D80, its more prosumer than comsumer but it takes really nice pictures. $1100+ Canon 30D, Nikon D200, etc.

Do not get Sony SLR's they are testing the waters and their imagine quality lacks.

There is no such camera as that is too subjective and becomes a matter of opinion. There are three classes of cameras, though. There is the consumer class costing $ 350 or less and are generally "view finder" type cameras, weather you view through a small window off set from the lens or on a moderate sized LCD screen. Then there are the prosumer cameras costing $ 1000 or less. The better ones in this class will be DSLR rather than view finder types and will have inter-changeable lenses. And, lastly, there are the professional DSLRs costing well over $1000. What is "best" depends on your pocket book and what you want to use it for. Pentax has one of the better mid priced DSLRs for around $700 that can well compete with much more expensive Nikon's, Cannons and Olympus's. Of the consumer digital cameras that I have (a 1.2 m/p spy cam and a 2.3 m/p Toshiba) I can take all the "snap shots" I care to. For my pro work (I do a lot of macro work) I use a Pentax *ist DL that at 6.2 m/p (3008x2008 RAW and 3008x2000 JPG) gives me all the quality I need. In layman's language that is a lot of over kill for a consumer that can get acceptable 4x6 prints with a Kodak Easy shoot for under $300.

Canyon Rebel if you are looking for a profession picture. It is more expensive but has the big lens and you can do manual or automatic focusing etc.

Canyon also makes a smaller digital camera that is great to keep in my purse and for those unexpected moments.

I've had a canon and now I have a sony. I'd have to say that sony is better. Especially now that they have bought The Carl Zeiss lens. It is faster than sony, and well, what more do you want than a good quality picture and a fast processor. -----sony-----
