I recall that a visitor -tourist- may "stay for a period NOT TO EXCEED six months OUT OF the last 18 months" in New Zealand.

Which in effect mens one may not visit within two consecutive years and stay for six months each time.

Is this rule still in force ?

I'm absolutely in love w/ So. Island. Too old to be eligible for immigrant status. Sigh.

You haven't said where you're from, so you'd be best off checking http://www.immigration.govt.nz or speaking to someone at your nearest NZ Embassy or High Commission.
