In Bangkok, taxi's are cheap and reliable. When you arrive at the new airport go down to the ground floor and get a cab to your hotel from the stand there. It costs about 10% of what they want to charge for a limo on the arrivals floor.
Search the net for hotels. Bangkok has hundreds and the biggest factor for convenience is location. Try to find one on Sukhumvit Road that you like the look of. They are nearly all good. Amari always work well but some people think the rooms too small.
The link below gives a listing for hotels in Sukhumvit. Many other booking agencies can also help.
I suggest Sukhumvit because it is the main tourist drag and it is easy to get anywhere from there. Getting food to suit western tastes and anything else is easy in this area.
Weather will be very hot and humid. June to October is hot and raining occasionally, October to January is hot and humid and the rest is very hot and humid. Expect around mid 30 Celsius and 80% humidity.
Don't worry about the military government. They are not interested in doing anything negative to tourism. Bangkok is still one of the safest places on earth. I have lived here for 12 years.

see 1000's of current Bangkok Photos of all the attactions at www.visualthailand.com then you will have a great idea what you want to see and how to spend your time. There is tons of useful info on that site and the stories are great as well (with photos)

Hotels, depends where you want to stay. Sukhumvit Road has a bunch including the Landmark which may be the nicest quality for the best price.

Anything near the river like the Peninsula, Oriental, Sheraton, etc are a real pain to get to and from so I would avoid any of the riverfront hotels due to your short stay.

April and May are the hottest months with temps in the 35+C range. Rains are also likely. Three days is not much time to explore but would suggest the Lonely Planet guide for a start. The new airport is about 30-45 minutes from the city center. Take a meter taxi for the most reliable or hire a limo if money is not an issue for you. Good decent hotels can be had from the $30USD a night range and depending on your taste, meals from $1.00 and up.

I went a while ago, but I remember this:

1. The weather in May is pretty nice (but HOT!)

2. Visit the Royal Palace, it's pretty amazing. Also, take a boat ride up the river to see a variety of temples, etc.

3. The Floating Market (it's out of town, but it's awesome. Go early, because it closes early).

Well, 3 days taking away arrival and departure, you are there for one full day. You will not have much time, but maybe you can use a halfd-day river cruise and a full day floating market and Thai cultural show tour package.

You can do this at any travel agency in Bangkok, if you do not wish to pre-book in your country. As for accommodation, go to www.asiarooms.com for your selection.

You can email me at thaitourinfo@yahoo.com for your query if you like.
