I have two beagle puppies. They are around 9 months and still are pretty hard to train. I understand that beagles are one of the most difficult breeds to train, So i was wondering if there was anyone who has had or has beagles and what things they did differently then normal to train their crazy yet loveable beagle. thank you!!

Most hounds are challenging to train. Beagles tend to "march to their own drum" so to speak. This means that they don't always react well to "normal training". You have to really work to find the method that works the best for your dog. I have found that the "reward" method has worked best with my beagles. Beagles like to eat and although I've found many who don't agree with using food as a bribe for good behavior (I don't use this method with any of my other dogs), rewarding them with food seemed to bring better results.

I've also found that they tend to get bored quickly, which means shorter training sessions several times a day. Your puppies are smart...they just don't find the training sessions worthy of their time. lol

It's hard to say if any beagle has ever been completely trained, but it's possible to get close. With daily training, by the time your pups are around 2 years old, they should be well behaved and obedient nearly all of the time.

If you want a dog that is easily trained to be a 100% reliable dog, don't get a beagle.

As far as housebreaking is concerned...I have found with my beagles as well as my other breeds that kennel/crate training works the best.

Good luck and enjoy the clever antics of your pups

That sucks you are having such problems. I have a 9 year old and a 7 month old and they are the greatest dogs I have ever had- it could be because I rescued both of them from BAD homes but although the older dog is a little stubborn, they are both really great dogs.
I do deal with seperation anxiety and a little arthiritis but other than that, they are good. I would recommend a beagle to anyone and have never heard they are hard to train at all.
I guess being consistent is the only thing I can think of, having someone home most of the time to be with them helps too. Do the research on the breed and see if the books or internet help you.

Yes, beagles can be crazy. I trained by keeping the lessons fun short and simple, 5 times a day. To get rid of that "crazy" behaivor, praise him, give him treats whenever he does something right. Make him feel good.

we have a beagle and she never really got the hang of listening. she's a pretty good dog, she loves everyone, but if someone was trying to break into the house all they'd have to do would be to pet her and she would lead them to the money. lol. we have 2 other dogs, and when i take them to the off leash dog park, i cant even take our beagle cuz one time she wondered off and i had to wait a half hour for her to *** back. beagles are cut but a pain!!!

I trained my beagle to do all kinds of tricks - from sit to shake to rollover to "reach for the sky" and play dead. She required food motivation - even a microscopic piece was good enough. Obedience though, she stunk at, since I couldn't constantly reward her with food. She had the attention span of a goldfish.

Well look at "Snoopy", Charlie Brown's dog. He was constantly doing something;-) Charles Schultz I think picked a beagle for a reason.

Take your pups to obedience classes.

Mine were crazy too, purebred huh? I started to train them to hunt, but wife spoiled them and they became house dogs. Was best to train them one on one.
