My ford ranger is a 2000 and it currently has a 3L V6.

You need a 9" and custom driveshafts along with a bigger transmission to handle torque.

The rear end can handle it. But I would suggest changing the tranny too. Ben their twice, no problems. Just one tree. The second one is going strong. Pulled away from a 96 Z71. A lot of work, but worth it.

Look for a good transmission for your v8 and drive shaft will differ. If you buy a used V8, make sure you change the oil and filter for the transmission. If you buy a rebuilt one, change oil and filter after 3000 miles. Tip - buy magnets when you change oil and put them on bottom of pan. If used transmission use synthetic oil for it. Change oil then when it gets dirty color.

just buy an older mustang, crown vic, explorer with 5.0 drivetrain and swap parts into the ranger
