My cats are so staticky that they crackle every time I pet them. I was just petting one on my bed and the static electricity actually _sparked_ - like with a visible blue spark on his coat. I do have a ceramic electric heater in the room, but holy crap ... don't really want to set a cat on fire while petting it.

I suggest putting on hand lotion--baby lotion would probably be best, since it's nontoxic--before touching your cat. That should dispel some of the static. Touching a cat with damp hands can also help. (Note I say damp, not wet--wet hands, and your cat wil not like you very much!)

Yes--definitely get a humidifier. Living in such dry conditions makes you and the cats prone to dry skin and hair, as well as upsetting your respiratory system for a while. You get used to those things after a while, yes; but when the dry air is seasonal, by the time your body has adjusted, it's humid summer again!

You should also brush the cat regularly, I find that getting rid of the extra fur helps with getting rid of the static. Although I have never seen it actually spark myself, it does seem to reduce static in summer. And, don't worry you won't set him on fire!

I don't know but it's really starting to scare my cat and she's getting to the point where she cringes when I go to pet her. She never used to be like this it just started happening about a month ago. When I pet her head it shocks her ears and I'm sure it hurts.

The sparks when you touch her ears DO hurt. You definitely need a humidifier - sounds like your air's too dry with that heater.

If you avoid their ears, rub them with the lights off - way cool!!
