The general formula for healthy weight is the BMI, or Body Mass Index.
BMI = Weight / (Height x Height) using kilograms and metres.
5'4" = 64 " = 1.62 metres tall, and 97 lb = 42.5 kilograms
BMI = 16.1 You are THIN.

Depending on who you talk to, a healthy body should be about 18.5 to 25.
Fashion parades are now banning models with a BMI under 18.

"This ban came after the model South American Luisel Ramos died after a starvation diet, which is a BMI of less than 15. She was only 22 years old when she died of a heart attack. Her diet consisted of only green leaves and diet coke for three months."

If you work the formula and convert back to Imperial, you need to GAIN 11 pounds, for a total weight of at least 108 pounds.

Edit: OK, you've posted your age as 13. That may have some effect, but not much. The bottom line is still- gain ten pounds. Minimum.

Eat nourishing food with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables being part of it. Chew each morsel at least 32 times. This will activate signal to the brain as soon as u have had enough. Besides this change in eating style, take regular light exercises and brisk walks every day. U will be able to gain/shed all extra weight gracefully and in a reasonable time span. No food or drink in between the food and not more than three meals a day, unless u r diabetic.

That is a very low weight, but however your body frame may only be built for that. If a doctor has not told you that you need to gain weight, then you are fine. Your body is yours and it's yours for a reason...you get to choose your look and your style. If being thin is the way you like yourself the most, then there isn't anything wrong with that. Everyone is beautiful in their own personal ways!

Your age would be important to know. If you are under 20 years of age, I would say that it is okay. Give time, and your growth the space it needs for you to develop. Women usually are a lot smaller than men, and they should be, to a point. I remember a some what famous actress whose name was "Twiggy", and she looked like one. She was very thin, but also quite healthy. Give yourself some time and allow yourself time to grow. Don't try to hasten it with bad foods, such as a lot of sweets. Your family history as regards their health plays an important role. Don't mess with your DNA and how it codes you to develop. Besides, there are other girls who would love to be a thin as you are. Be gentle with yourself, all good things in their time. Accept yourself as you are, and enjoy being who you are right now. It just might be that you being happy with who you are will help someone else to be happy with who they are. That would be the most wonderful gift you could ever give to someone else.

seriously, get some more weight on. im a guy and seriously, i would much rather prefer a girl with more love handles than a really skinny, bony girl. Don't be too selfconscious. it does not mattter what people think, if people think you are too fat, then they are @$$holes because only d1p5h1ts would go and tell other people that they are fat.

you've got to have more self confidence. Come on! I know you have it within you.

5'4" and 97 pounds? Well, dear you're very thin. I am your height and weigh a lot more than that; my weight is still normal.

Actually, you're underweight, your BMI (body mass index) is lower than 17.5. Healthy BMI is 18.5-24.9, so you could actually afford to gain.

I'm sorry you feel self-conscious hun. It honestly sounds to me like you could have an eating disorder. But, that's okay...I would definitely understand as I'm bulimic.

your are actually underweight. you should weigh around 115 to 135. i myself am 5'4" and i weigh about 125. i asked my doc the same question and that is what he told me. if you want to gain weight but not look like you just ate like a pig try going to the gym and bulking up. eat right. don't be afraid to splurge a little every now and then. eat that chocolate if you want it. just excercise if you start looking pudgy. i know my major concern is my abs. i just do situps and crunches. being underweight is just as bad as being overweight. it has equally damaging health risks. please put a little meat on your bones. plus, most guys like a little meat
