Pledging is the actual process...which varies from each frat or sorority and is kept under high secrecy. Rush is like when they are showing what their org is all about and so on.

Fraternities and Sororoties are VERY different.

Fraternities have "Rush Parties". You go to the parties and you meet the members. To the Rushee's it all looks very informal, but it is carefully organized. Different members will meet you, and informally introduce you around. If they like you they will introduce you to other members who are on the membership team. The way we did it was we would have a number of guys on the team and in the course of the evening you would meet them all. Then at some point the team would meet and they would either offer you a bid or not. If they really liked you they might give you a bid on the spot. Other times they might invite you back and if you come to another party they might bid you then.

The bid is your invitation to become a Pledge. What pledges do and go through varies from Fraternity to Fraternity and Campus to Campus depending on how "P.C." each campus and/or Fraternity is. Basicly you spend a semester on the bottom of the food chain/social ladder.

If you make it through your Pledgship and don't get "blackballed" you get to go through initiation. Make it through that and you are a member.

I am told that Sororties work on a different system. All the girls that want to join ANY Sororoty go to events at the different Sororoty houses and meet the different Sororoty sisters. Then the houses meet and divide up the class, and the girls get told which Sororoty they will be invited to join. It's a take it or leave it offer. You may have your heart set on becoming a KKG, but you get invited to become a Tri-Delt instead. At least that is what the girls told me back when I was in college in the 80s

At that point you then go through pledgeship and initiation, not unlike the way the guys do at the Fraternity.
