for the same reason they say "I took a dump". It is simply an expression that makes no sense and contains no logic......kind of like "God bless you".

Maybe it shook so hard it went off the wall. In high school we use to break the glass off. On a daily basis. Fire department didn't like it too good.

When the alarm is set it is on, and it is silent...when it is set off by motion or whatever means...it is going off meaning sounding.
