Other than I try to be gentlemanly, I with many others release gas, sometimes quite suddenly with little effort.
This question requires a three part response:
(1) Farting in public is quite liberating and could become a new trend as other rights are being taken away in the name of public health.
In but another generation or two, laws may be enacted and "no farting" signs will be as prevalent as those forbidding smoking are today. A huge fine will be levied and notorious violators will undoubtedly have their sensational arrest noted in the Times or Guardian "In the past month alone over 1000 brazen a*oles were arrested for breaking the new no wind-breaking law."
2. National health and environmental announcements will flood the airwaves: Scientists across the world are applauding the findings from the new international meeting on global warming. Since the banning of smoking the continual rise in farting has contributed significantly to global warming, the wilting of house plant leaves, and to the fouling of air in metropolitan areas. The announcement included the observation that suffering a bit of abdominal cramping and discomfort will do far less overall damage to individuals than the breathing of noxious fumes.
3. In support of the new effort to cleanse the air of foul odours due to runaway farting, the Ministry of Health has proposed the installation of farting rooms in all major buildings. Vetalisation sytems in these rooms booths will immediately recirculate air, decontaminate, and deodourise farts, thus preventing the watering of eyes and possible fainting from passers by the passers. A second plan will be to provide farting kiosks fashioned after telephone kiosks. In this revolutionary approach people need only back up to the kiosks, let rip the offensive deed, and like a hoover, the machinery within the kiosk will suction away the gas, and as with larger scale farting rooms, scrub the air.

Yes, if you do it silently and it doesn't smell. Sometimes, though, it just comes out (I made a really loud one at college once by accident - was very embarrassing)!
A farting room could be an interesting idea, but IMO it'd have to use the gases given off by people for energy to it and other parts.
People, would, however, go on fart breaks every 5 minutes to get out of work, and toilets are perfectly adequate farting rooms!

From Allen Edwardes pornographic masterpiece, ‘The Jewel interior the Lotus’ :- "Breaking wind (zirt, fart), like belching (itkerreh), became seen by technique of Arab and Hindoo as an act of purification; for it sought to force all evil spirits from the body. Zirteh, a noisy discharge became fairly civil and proper interior the organisation of others; yet insidious fesweh (fizzle, creeper), with stench, became called an insult. Many an Arab died because of it, highly even as vented interior the presence of royalty. Such a individual became termed Fezwaun (Fizzler) while his counterpart, a guy of purity and esteem, became venerably entitled Eboo-ez-Zirteh (Father of Farts). Simojeh-el-Hewweh (Breaker of Wind) became the appellation granted an Egyptian bean-eater who might want to spoil wind in track, a traditional accomplishment of fellaheen boys. "Deyyer (to enable fly a noisy flatus) grew to develop right into a fave be conscious in Arab thoughts, and by no ability something aroused more effective laughter than this: “He enable fly 2 large farts, one among which blew up the dirt from the earth’s face and the different steamed up the gates of Heaven.” between the Bedewween, between the most conventional and time-honored thoughts of the Arabian Nights, is “How Eboo-Hessen Brake Wind.” It recounts the humorously lamentable tale of a comfortable guy who, upon his wedding ceremony evening, “enable fly a fart, large and negative” that shamed him into forsaking his bride and living house finished of startled travellers. Thereafter zirt, for its sanitary and respectful nature, gained such interest that information were kept indicating the first time someone of enormous enormous difference became heard to interrupt wind. to that end, in communique with a stranger, it became no longer uncommon for an Arab proudly to say: “i became born on the very evening that Eboo-Hessen farted!”

There are ventilated farting rooms. They are called toilets and no one will think any less of you if you go and bum burp to your hearts content in these places which are situated all over the place.

it is never very pleasant but it is understandable, sometimes it just happens and like you said it isn't good for your health. there are much more unsanitary things that the public views as "okay" and farting is just part of a healthy lifestyle and sometimes over reacted to.

I don't think it will ever work.
A farting room wouldn't be like a breath of fresh air.
And I honestly don't think people would want to go into a room and smell the nasty scent of like 10 people's fart.
