Each key on your phone has a specific tone that is generated when you hit them. 0-9 each have one and * and # sign also have a specific tone.

They are used for specific commands in telephone systems to route a call in a Auto Attendent, Voicemail, and to access certain features on your phone(call forward, Ring Again, Last Number Redial, ect.......)

Take a look in your phone book should tell you what some of them are.

They are used to send commands to the phone and break up data so it can understood and used.

Many phone need you to do this. For example to divert your call you may need to use the following syntax

#21#phonenumber# to set and maybe
*21* to cancel the divert.

Read the manual, there is heaps of stuff you can do.
