There are great swordmakers around today, and if money is no issue, you can get some great weapons at a reasonable price.

However, here are a few things you MUST know. Most practical swords are not pretty. So if you see chroming, miror finish, right shiny brass, fake gold plating, velvet handle and the like, stay away from it. Likewise for fancy-shmancy hilt decorations. Also, stay away from Stainless Steel. It makes great cutlery and awesome kitchen counters and appliances but it's not worth squat when it comes to making swords. Go for high-tensile spring steel alloys and only pick and choose from a maker willing to stand by his work with a good warranty.

My suggestion go as follow:

Albion Armory. They make excellent blades and they have a line of weapons meant for sparring as well as their sharps.

Christian Fletcher. By far one of the greatest available today. His work is beautiful and his swords handle like dreams. Light and perfectly balanced. However, you would have to ask one that is not sharpened. As a default, they come battle-sharp, which means they can take off limbs.

Angus Trim. His weapons are nice, though a bit on the light side for my taste. But they are good weapons. Like Chris Fletcher, I beleive you have to request non-sharpened.

Heinrich. Based in Montreal. Fairly inexpensive sparring swords. However, they tend to be pigs, too heavy for their size and style.

Also, Valentine Armouries offers inexpensive steel longswords. However, I have no firsthand experience with them but a friend of mine considers them adequate.

But if you are tight on funds, I will suggest but not recommend going for the Paul Chen/Hanwei swords. I personally do not care much for them but they are inexpensive. The only way I would suggest getting one of those is to start out with, in case that you develop no true taste for swordsmanship. But if you do enjoy it, they make good starter swords before you move up to one of the better swordmakers such as the ones mentionned above.

Also, there are many manufacturer of extremely acceptable aluminium training weapons that have the same balance and weight as their steel counterparts while retaining about 90% of steel's flex, but providing a nice fat edge for sparring, which is a lot safer than steel (even blunt), especially for beginners. Just don't use steel blades against aluminum ones. Steel will chew Aluminum to bits in a real hurry.
