If you have been talking to this for 2 years, I don't see how going out with him is jumping the gun. It could mean that he is at a point where he wants a more mature relationship with you.

make sure that when you decide to jump into his life its really what you want. Mainly because you feel that you have some kind of connection and that you really like how he is. by the way no, it doesnt mean that he has always had a crush on you...maybe he just realized that he needed someone to be there for him and that had to be you.

Two possibilities.

1. To marry you
2. To have you as a girlfriend, a license to premarital life (with the intention not to marry you in the future.

If you want him to marry you, accept the date. May tell him that you have acrush on him. But not intimate and led to sleep with him.

Both of you will surely have full of magic moments together if you keep away from sexual r/ship or intimate relationship until you guys got married.
