My little Tenterfield Terrier (mini foxy X jack russell I think) manages to get bitten by nasty black ants. Our yard has thousands of them unfortunately. She suffers a lot of pain and limps holding her foot up and licks it heaps to help in the healing. She even holds her paw up when doing a poo!! :) What can I give her to releive her pain. I've tried running cold water over it but alas she still suffers badly. I'm training her to look for ants on her feet with the emphasis on the word "ANTS!!" and she is smelling her feet all the time to check if they are trapped under her paws. But despite all this still gets bitten often. Has anyone else had a similar problem and how was it solved? I look forward to your reply.

You have got to treat your yard.

Either buy products yourself or hire an exterminator. Have them treat the yard, and for a day or two you can take your dog for walks instead of having her in the back yard.

You don't want her getting infected feet or having a life threatening reaction. You must address the ants.

Good luck.

Please get your ants exterminated! If you can't afford to, don't let your dog out in your yard, but take her for walks to go potty. Ant bites are extremely painful. They are not easy to avoid in an infested yard either. Not even if you train your dog. I had ants in a yard that marched to get inside of one of my dogs bones which my dog picked up and got bitten all over by. These were fire ants. The dog got real sick and I had to keep him hydrated and give him regular doses of Benadryl. He was okay but what I did was I went to a feed store and got something to exterminate the ants with and kept watch for any new out breaks. I quit letting my dog have meals or bones outside. These things attract some ants.
So forget training her to look for them. Kill the dern things.
As far as dog shoes go, most dogs hate them, they aren't natural and that's not good to put on your dog besides the fact that the ants will likely crawl into them and bite her more.

For God's sake get rid of the ants. And do not take the dog anywhere you know it will be harmed!!!!Dogs often hold their back legs up when they poop.My poms will sometimes hold up both back legs and stand on their front paws and almost fall on their nose it is sooo funny It is like they don't want to poop on their feet or something????Just don't take the dog back to where the ants are he could have a shock reaction at anytime if he got even one more bite.

two things
1. she probably is having an allergic reaction. you might try giving her a tiny dose of benadryl or something like that. but with such a little dog i would consult a vet and you need to make sure that the bites won't hurt her physically like her blood or anything
2. the other thing you might try is buyig her doggie shoes they are not too expensive and would make her feet much happier

i wish you luck... the poor thing :(

would you be able to chemically spray your yard to rid the ants? call her vet. because that is a serious issue.
