to sweat through the skin. Cats don't normal sweat like people so they sweat through their paws, nose pad, pant when really hot. A dry or wet nose doesn't mean they are sick. The only way to tell a cat is sick to have their body temperature taken with a rectal thermometer.

Cats noses are wet because it acts as an immune system , you can even tell if your cat has a cold if their nose is dry.

could it be that wetness conditions the air going into their noses, allowing for greater "smell-sensitivity" ?
(having water/water-vapor present is essential for many organic chemical reactions to take place ... and the scent-sense is definitely chemical in nature)

It has to do with the fact that cats (and dogs) have a very acute sense of smell. It helps to "collect" the scent molecules.
