I did a study into this, in the church which I attend. We had 5 [ five Churches] local ministers, each was paid between $30, 000 and $ 50,000. per year. Their average hours were 80 hours per week and the "head" Pastor worked and travelled all over his region plus, 5 churches locally. The bulk of the $ given by the lay-membership was used to pay and maintain facilities, finance youth camping trips for 3 weeks each in duration (summer), finance youth ski trips (winter) and a yearly all-churches track-meet in another city. Further, $ was used to give to the needy (poor), help employable people with their bills when he or she was out of work (between jobs), $ was donated to widows and single moms. Usually, the yearly budget was barely kept in the black. Everyone in some way, shape or form benefited from the $ donated to the church.

This is a very hard question to answer IN THIS DAY & AGE. First let me say all monies donated to the church is "suposed" to be used for the furtherance of God's kingdom/work. If these monies were used to assist the needy, the aged, the sick, etc.who cannot afford to help themselves, then it is used wisely. On the other hand if the monies are spent for the Minister's vacation, fancy new beach house, or a Cadillac when a Buick would do the job; then I would suggest the monies are not furthering God's work but they are furthering the rich lifestyle of a man. God teaches us to be HUMBLE. that does not living so low we can't change our suit; but we certainly DO NOT need $800.00 suits. I believe the minister should be awarded a monthly fee representative to a reasonable standard of living for the area in which he lives. In some cases we have TV evangelists who are making more money per month than your elected officials. I think they have stepped over the line of Humility. Again, that is what I THINK.

A word to the wise: tithe where you are fed. If your church sits you in a pew and passes the collection plate, and when you leave there, you still haven't learned anything about what is in Gods Word - what God has to say, instead of what some preacher/pastor/priest has to say, then I'll bet thats a congregation thats starving to death. Some of these tv ministries are questionable at best regarding where the money goes that people donate. They beg continuously for money.
Its not so hard to spot them - hey, if all someone has to talk about instead of the Word of God, is about how they have to reach their special goal and your pledge will help, its pretty obvious that its not God on their mind, its your wallet. God does not send out beggars. Tithe where you are fed. Don't get ripped off - if you aren't being fed the Word of God, why would you support that ministry? God calls them "houses of nothing", and even says that if you support a church that doesn't feed the sheep, don't expect Him to bless that effort.

If you like going to your church and having it lighted, heated or cooled, and supplied with water, you do. If you like having a priest/minister/pastor there to lead or help, you do. Depending upon your church and its size, a good part of the offering could go to church upkeep. Also, each individual church is different. Some of them are able to donate a lot to missions and other agencies that help people. Some may run their own missions. If you're curious about your church, just ask to see the annual report.

At my church, the bulk of the donations are given as charitable relief to the poor. Other donations are used to help keep the light and water bills paid at the actual church building itself.

Those who "donate" it. It is GOD who gives you your job and the mind and health to do it and all that is asked of you is obedience to give a tenth of it into the House of GOD. GOD nor the Church need your money. This is the ONLY thing that GOD ever said you could test HIM on. HE said see if I will not open the windows of Heaven and pour out a blessing that your barns cannot hold.
If GOD can get it THROUGH you HE will get it TO you. It is NOT about the money!!!! GOD owns the "cattle on a thousand hills" and the hills under them (along with everything else).

That will change depending on the particular church you're talking about. Property maintenance, food for the poor, and missionary funding seems to be the major focus for our church. We gave away 2 tons of food last week!

I suppose it depends on the church. A true Christian church would use it to heal the sick, feed and clothe the poor, spread the gospel. Christian's are commanded to give 10% of their earnings to their church. But we are also commanded to be good stewards of our money. Those who are in charge of finances at the church are accountable to God, but also to you. If money is being spent in an inappropriate manner, it's your duty to rebuke those responsible. If the situation can't be resolved, it's time to move on.

The minister who runs that church and the people who help him in his work. Like the Levite priests, church ministers are to be sustained by the gifts they receive from their followers and supporters - at least until they are self-supporting from personal investments, inheritance, sale of books, surmons and/or music.
