I need a big ol' list of charitable organizations and the causes they support. I am going to give to at least one charity every month. Also, tell me your favorite charity and why.

Your local volunteer center or the United Way provide a connection to many local charitable organizations. Most volunteer centers have a database of different organizations that they work with, and information about the organizations.

My favorite charity to support would be my local volunteer center. I am on the Board of Directors of my local center, and lead a variety of volunteer projects. In addition, I'm an active volunteer with them as well. I like the fact that the volunteer center matches people with hundreds of different non-profit organizations an groups that may not have otherwise been easy to find or support. The ease of access to the many different community projects gives me a way to make the widest impact throughout the community.

Good for you! Congratulations. You should first think about what kinds of problems there are in your local area and in the world. Narrow it down to a few of the most important problems. That will make your search easier.

If you are just starting, try donating to local charities. Then you can go over to their offices and check them out and ask questions. You'll learn a lot.

Here are websites I like: put in your zip code and see which charities come up: www.faithinaction.org (they're all multi-faith); www.volunteermatch.org and www.guidestar.org.

My favorite charity is www.rfbd.org. They help people read textbooks so they can get an education and get a good job.

You can not only see a list of charities on the following websites, you can get ratings for them to get some sense if they'll use your money wisely:

http://www.charitynavigator.org (I like this one)
http://www.guidestar.org/ (Requires free registration)
http://www.give.org (a Better Business Bureau site)

You can find a list by searching on the web...

Thanks for the question!

(p.s.: I have a related question; what resources do you use to check out charities... If you're interested in answering, click on my profile, go to the questions I've asked, and go from there :)

My favorite charity is one that supports victims of Domestic Violence. There are many in each community. Since most of Domestic Violence victims are women lets start there. Victims of domestic violence have very low self esteem. They stay in their situations because they feel if this person loves her and treats her this way how will she survive in a world filled with strangers. It is so hard to leave. Especially if you have children and no skills as far as the work force goes. We need to educated women, help them to leave the situation. Assist them in getting housing, employment and any thing else that they need to begin their lives in a safe and nurturing atmosphere. We need to get them counseling and to assist their children in the same way.

We need to support these victims in the legal system to end the cycle of violence.

Build the family relations, keep the family strong and we all will have a better community in which to live.

If you really wish to see the largest list of charitable organizations, go to http://www.volunteermatch.org

The list is quite huge, and it has a full description of each charity.

I give financially and volunteer at the local Youth Emergency Shelter. Our kids need all the help they can get; some need it more and more often. You can find a list just by typing in the word "charity" on your address bar and get bombarded by them.

My favorite is the Red Cross.
I have been a volunteer for the Red Cross for about 13 years, and I have seen what they do and how they use their resources. I think they do a wonderful job both in the local communities and in the world. They are everywhere, they have activities for the local community, they are in war zones, they are there when there`s a natural disaster.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
and
Food Not Bombs

I highly recommend both, and I volunteer for those organizations so I know first-hand that they are doing good work!
