I can't say that I honestly know. I can't say that I have ever personally experienced it. I can say that I have witnessed it and find it to be a bit too-show.

My ex-wife was a very spirit filled woman. To my uneducated ear she was uttering the same polysyllabic jiberish over and over. It has it's own staccato cadence and patterns but it isn't as varied as what we may recognize as speech.

If I am the control group in the average church setting where this kind of thing is common place I have two observations. First I wonder how many of the "speakers" would be doing so outside of a public setting. I mean, if tounges is the language of the spirit, shouldn't they use it in private prayer as well? My second observation is that it appears to be learned behavior. People get positive reinforcement from their peers for this gift of the spirit but there isn't much incentive to "learn" much more than a few easily repeated syllables. It doesn't strike me as the kind of language that you could use to order lunch, let alone convey complex ideas and emotions.

I'm sure that I'm going to thumbs down hell with the athiests and agnostics for showing an academic interest in the concept. I'm probably going to the other hell with the rest of you for calling it into question. All being said I don't think it's an illness as much as it is a Pavlovian response to a social stimulus. I guess there are just some things in this world that you either take on faith or reject as speculation and about which reasonable people can disagree.

No. Read 1 Corinthians 14 or any of the book of Acts.

No. Speaking in tongues is the evidence that you have been filled with the Holy Spirit. Trust me, it's not an illness. It is a precious gift from God. God bless you!

Far from it. It is a spiritual gift from God. It may seem odd, but it is defintely a blessing, not a sickness.

Yes, it's called insanity or brain damage. Those who believe it are also brain damaged. I stopped going to church years ago because I got sick of these fake displays - I was going out into the hall to laugh at them.

I guess it might be if you don't grow out of it at the age of 6 like everyone else did.
