What are they and what can I do if I think I am getting it?

Man, I don't wish that on anyone. Fever, chills, weakness, severe sore throat, swelling of the throat. If left alone, the throat will become too sore to swallow, then breathing will become difficult due to swelling. Cure requires antibiotics and a heavy duty painkiller, the doctor gave me Vicodin the last time just so I could eat while waiting for the antibiotics to work. Next time I get it, I'm having them removed, it's too horrible.

Personally, and I am not a medical professional, I think your symptoms you describe about the burning and pressure at the top of your stomach are more consistent with G.E.R.D. (Gastroesophegial Reflux Disease) also, sometimes called severe heartburn. I don't think it's related to your tonsillitis, but I don't know for sure. I think only a doc can say for sure. And how could you tell if your tonsils are infected with a viral or bacterial infection? I think you should see a primary physician for initial assessment of both, and maybe a gastroenterologist for the reflux and an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor for the tonsillitis, if necessary. Better to be safe than sorry. Re: the reflux, you might wanna try some antacid and see if that helps any. Remember, I am not a doctor or even a nurse, so I am not a medical expert.

The main symptom of tonsillitis is a sore throat. Additional symptoms occur in most cases. Some or all of the following may be present:

Fever
Bad breath
Nasal congestion and runny nose
Swollen lymph nodes
Red, swollen tonsils covered completely or in patches by pus
Difficulty swallowing
Headache
Abdominal pain
Raw, bleeding patches on the tonsils
Visible growth of bacteria on the tonsils
When sore throat is accompanied by coldlike symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and coughing, the cause is most likely a virus. Viral infection of the tonsils usually goes away without treatment within 2 weeks.

Sore throat with a sudden fever above 101 °F(38.3 °C)—milder fever may indicate a viral infection—and swollen lymph nodes may indicate a bacterial infection. Anyone with these symptoms should see a health professional for diagnosis because of the risk of strep throat. Although strep throat will usually go away even without treatment, an untreated strep infection can lead to complications including rheumatic fever, which can permanently damage the heart.
