A common reason is lack of oxygen and/or excess CO2. This can be from sleeping face down (as in passed out drunk) or sleeping with the head under the covers. I have heard this is common when sleeping in the morning after the sun is up.

Not enough sleep is a cause.

Drinking the night before can give you a hangover.

dehydration. Make sure you don't go to bed thirsty.

TMJ and/or teeth grinding while sleeping.

tense muscles (too cold, bad pillow, old/soft matress, travel gnomes hitting you on the head while you are asleep with little mallets)

coming down sick with a cold or flu

take your pick.

A bad matress, sleeping with a someone that isn't a good sleep partner, and bad pillow/crooked neck are my bets.

head under the blanket because room too noisy/cold/bright is my number 2 bet.

let me know if it was the gnomes...

You could have sleep apnea. It is a condition where you stop breathing in the middle of the night, and constantly wake up (though you don't know it) and have to reposition yourself. It leads to altered sleep patterns and can trigger major headaches.

maybe your heater is drying out the air, causing your sinuses to become dry. I have this problem, and my kids have had morning coughs, so when I wake up I boil like a galon of water to restore the humidity in the house, it helps alot.

I don't know it happens to me about 2 of the seven days of the week. I can't stand it. But I think it happens more often when I sleep on my back.

Sleep apnia, or sleeping on your face, somehow cutting off your oxygen when asleep. Try getting one of those special shaped pillows, or get Breathe-Rite nasal strips.

Sinus...allergies....hayfever...pillow out of whack. (makes your head and neck hurt) dry air in the house will give you sinus problems and cats, dogs, ferrets, etc might give you allergy problems (as will your bed if you don't keep it clean. Dust mites will cause allergies.)
