you can see a therapist at the local mental health center at a fee based on your income. i go myself and have a few more diagnoses than just BD. i've never been threatened with being commited. something very extreme would have to occur before commitment. at the mental health center you would be evaluated by a therapist and then a pshyciatrist and prescribed meds to help with the disorder. it may take awhile to get the meds just right but that is what it takes to function with bipolar. good luck. by the way i don't have a job either so i don't pay for my sessions and am still seen at least once a week.

Meds for a month, can't imagine that did anything for you! If you can afford at least to SEE a Dr., let him/her know your situation up front. Dr.'s offices have an life time supply of 'samples'. Besides, you will need to see which med or combination of meds are best for you. If the Dr. is understanding, they will give you enough meds to see if they work from their stock pile of samples. If nothing else, you need to get some type of work to at least pay for the meds after the first month or two. Once you're stable, you should be able to hold down a job.

You can go through a general practicioner as well, just as long as they and you are willing to discuss how the selected meds are working for you, which means you can go to a family practice or a free clinic. You can also look into medicaid or state services. Check out these web sites:

Just go back to the hospital, they will readjust your meds, and the social worker who handles your case will help with your financial issues. Just by being bi-polar the state will allow you to collect a disability check monthly, but you have to get a doctor to diagnose you properly, and you need a good social worker. The state will also give you government medical insurance which cover your meds which will last as long as you qualify.
This is in Illinois, I don't know how the state of Louisiana works.
The most important thing for you to do is to check back into the hospital, it is part of your illness not to follow up with medication.

Try applying for Medicaid . Make an appointment with a local hospital clinic, they should be able to help you , not only with the meds but also the application process. Congratulations on seeking the help concerning your health. You are headed in the right direction. Not everyone with bipolar gets commited ,especially the ones who seek treatment on their own. This just proves you are in a healthy state of mind.

Just because you are bipolar does not mean you will be committed. People are only committed when they are thought to be a danger to them selves or others you can talk to doctors a lot will give you free samples of the medications if you have money issues making it hard for you to receive treatment you can talk to church's they can always help you or you could move to Canada where they have free health systems in place, you can get doctors who work on a sliding scale tell them about your money problems and they may be able to help you out. Goodluck with it

I'm bipolar and I've never been committed. Go seek the help you need, showing how you DO NOT need to be committed, and get yourself more stable. Then the job will come much more easily and your overall quality of life will improve. Go for it, and don't worry about being committed. (sorry...can't help with the financial details)

there are some doctors offices that will see yu with low income and they will usually issue samples for you if you can not afford them. is there like a social services in your area that will help you obtain like a state card. def if it is too unbearable, go to the hospital and tell them your problem and instead of commiting you(unless you say you want to harm yourself) they may help you as well. good luck.
