which will become the new format?

Both formats have their advantages, but right now, the format war is almost over. Blu-ray is significantly more successful in gaining user confidence, and their players are dropping in price quicker. There will never be a dual-format existence, as those players would automatically be more expensive to manufacture, and require dual licensing. The dual format players are a failsafe until this format war is over, so that once the winner is official, you won't have to go out and buy a new player. Personally, I say wait until it's for sure. Everyone is too eager to play with their new HD sets. Be patient. And be careful-just because a format is higher quality doesn't mean that it will win. Look at VHS vs. Betamax. But if you absolutely must have HD right now, I'd say go with Blu-Ray.

I believe neither format will win because the formats are divided virtually down the middle when it comes to movie companies and gaming consoles. Also, at this year's CES, LG just announced a dual format DVD player that will read both formats. If everyone follows them, then there will be no need to choose between the two.

BluRay has a slight edge because PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player, therefore there is more BluRay DVD players.

I hate to burst your bubble Craig, but 51GB HD-DVD discs are more expensive than standard BluRay Discs. Also, BluRay can go up to 200GB at 8 layers, which Sony has demonstrated.
