I understand that general math is very fundamental in almost every field of work out there, but I am definitely NOT a math/science person and I have no future plans of working in an area that includes heavy duty math. What kind of math do I have to take in college (generally) and when can I stop using it?!

I am more of a writing, creative person. I have done very well in my English classes and plan on taking AP English next year. I have no idea really what career I plan on pursuing....!

you use math in your everyday life meaning to or not...it just comes natural...Assuming that you are going to college the field you enter wil probably include math unless its English, or the Arts. Depending on what you major depends on the math you have to take... often Calculus is taught along with algerbra and sometimes trig. I hope this has come to help you!

You never know what you'll need, but basic math is essential. I'll admit to never having had a class in calculus or trig, and I've done pretty well in a couple of different careers. But as some of the other commentators have said, if you want to buy a house, have a bank account, take out loans, invest for retirement, etc., you'll need a bit more more know-how than 1+1=2. Most colleges will make you take college algebra, but I believe most have dropped the trig/calc requirements for humanities majors. When you start investigating colleges, ask specifically about the core math requirements for your major--they'll be printed or online in the unergraduate catalog.

If you ever want to be a tradesman or have kids it's priceless.

I was like you and never thought I would use it but I ended up as a Sheet Metal Mechanic and pattern layout is a major part of my job. Dissecting angles and lines, calculating circumference and areas are daily tasks.

For a parent being able to help your child is rewarding.
It started with adding and subtracting in grade 1, now even tonight, 1 week before my daughters grade 10 exams, I'm helping her with quadratic equations and the sin law. Most of the time I have to glace over a chapter or 2 in her text book but she knows she can always come to me for help.

Will you ever buy a house? buy a car? use credit cards? get a loan? invest for your retirement? You will need solid basic math skills for all of these and lots more in life. People without math skills get 'screwed' every time they finance a car, house, credit cards, loans, etc. If you can't 'do the numbers' you will get screwed. Period.

Also, math serves to teach you to think clearly and logically. Those skills will serve you well no matter what you do in life.

Best wishes and good luck.

I think that Math is very important in our lives everyday. this is one thing that we will use till the day that we die. We will use in our finances at home, setting up a budget, writing checks, and depending on what career you choose math will always be a part of that.

it's been several decades ago, but I took a course one summer called business math. it taught how to do simple things in everyday life that would be very good to take. as far as how much math you need to take that will be determined by your major. different majors require different required. each collage will have slightly different requirements for each major. if your doing science/engineering/medical plan on a lot of math.

What do you plan do do with your life, how much money will you make? Will you be able to handle you finances? It's sometimes more than general math. Perhaps more on what you plan to do could help us tell you how important it is.

Well, math isn't just about numbers and calculations.

i realized that the seemingly none-sense mathematics i took in high school and college helped me exercise my ANALYTICAL brain..and it made me more competitive in my professional field.

I think that in learning math we just need to make full use (as possible) our logical, critical, creative and analytical thinking.
