If your husband retired than he is covered. If he was injured during war/conflict, he is covered. He needs to check his discharge papers--there should be information in the packet.

Your husband must go to a VA hospital or the VA website at www.va.gov and apply if he hasn't already done so. Until he does this and been accepted, he is not covered. It is not automatic like he seems to think...

My grandfather was in the Navy and used a VA Hospital for all of his needs. So I would think your Husband would still be covered as long as he goes to the VA hospital in your area.
You should be able to look it up on your computer, find their number and call them to make sure.
