I'm not trying to be smart, but seriously, if you had put in the time to research this breed, attend shows, attend fancier clubs, and truly commit to his breed, you'd already have the answers. Very few reputable breeders will respond to an ad in a newspaper to breed a dog. What you will get through that is backyard breeders with unregistered dogs that have not been vet checked for various breed health problems nor cleared for breeding in any way.

What you need to do is start attending dog shows, get involved in his breed's community, meet people who show and breed, get him involved in something, whether it's confirmation shows, obedience, agility, whatever, and have him vet-checked for breeding- eyes, joints, hips, etc., whatever his breed has problems with needs to be certified before you can even THINK about find a mate for your dog.

There's so much more to breeding than running newspaper ads and throwing a male and female together. PLEASE do your homework before you attempt this. If you're not willing to put in the time, effort, and money, neuter your dog and spare the dog world from another batch of unhealthy dogs. We don't need any more pet quality dogs, the shelters are overflowing with them. If you're going to breed, do it to improve the bloodlines by moving them closer to the breed standard. And you are going to get a lot of angry answers, because like I said, if you had already done your research on this, you wouldn't have to ask it on here. Good luck.

*** You do research for breeding them by learning ABOUT them- by attending and participating in shows, talking to breeders, reading and understanding the breed standard, learning all their health issues, learning how to properly groom and show one, learning all about their history, etc. You need to do all that long before you worry about the actual biological parts of breeding.

Before you do ANYTHING, you should be taking your dog to have testing done, on hips, eyes, thyroid, etc...and if you are serious about being a true, real, breeder, you should be entering your dog in dog shows, and your dog should obtain a championship title. THAT way, you can be sure that your dog actually has qualities that SHOULD be passed on from generation to generation. JUST because a dog CAN breed, does not mean it SHOULD. And NO, "papers" do not mean "BREEDING QUALITY". There is a lot more important things, like HEALTH and GENETICS that should be in place before any dog is bred.

i'm with alyssa. she's not being a smart butt and neither am i, a reputable breeder should not have to run an add. why can't you contact the breeder you got him from. if he is a good breeding stock they should be able to tell you so. and his mom being a show dog means nothing. did she win? best in show, etc...health screening, etc....all things you need to consider before running an add of any sort.

You would want to mention that he is not a proven stud and that he is "ready". Reality is that he may not know what to do....but if the female is ready he will learn very quickly. You want to have figured out your terms (do you want a puppy or cash). Have a contract. The female should come to your house, so get a set up ready. If you have never done this before, do alot of reading. Hope that helps.

make sure the female has a "bruce" test for doggie "std's".
and that she and your dog are at least good examples of their breed . and that they are the right color to breed together. and that they are of the same breed.:) be very picky !
