Ive heard and read that a good rule of thumb is every 500 calories under 2000 that you consume will roughly burn 1 pound of fat a week (3500 calories is the standard number used to burn one pound of fat, 7 days at -500 calories = 1lb of fat). Note, no more than 2lbs of fat per week is deemed to be very healthy.

On average, a healthy adult uses about 2000 calories per day through bodily functions, exercise, and any other metabolic processes. If you only consume 1200, you should burn around 800 calories that your body has stored, most often in the form of fat. The body gets about 2000 calories from each pound of fat. That is, you should lose 2.8 pounds each week on that diet. However, the effects are better if you excercise and eat healthy foods so your body can still function well.

You'll lose, but slowly. You could always use the Rotation Diet and rotate up to a higher amount on the second week. Supposedly this is suppose to help your metabolism..... I used this diet years ago and was able to stay on the maintenance part of it for about 9 months....

I lost about 50 lbs in the first couple of months of it.

it all depends on your current height/weight/age.
check out this website. i think it has lots of calculators where you can figure that stuff out pretty precisely.

The thing is, if you do that your body would adjust its metabolism to conserve energy since it's getting less fuel, so you wouldn't lose as much much as you might anticipate.
