If you were born an American, you'll aways be an American. But you can get a dual citizenship and avoid a lot of travel hassles by being a citizen of Germany also.

You will not lose your American citizenship when you become a German citizen unless you INTEND to lose it. Here is the official word on loss of US citizenship and dual nationality:

once you've one german figure and one US figure then below german regulation you nonetheless have twin citizenship. if both your mothers and fathers were german then convinced you've gotten lost it once you grew to develop into an american Germany does no longer enable twin citizenship below German regulation, someone may no longer have more effective than one citizenship till he/she became born with both.. to that end, German regulation calls for an American who turns right into a German citizen by ability of the Einbürgerung procedure to formally renounce his/her American citizenship, and a German who turns into an American citizen to resign his/her German citizenship.

You might if they make you renounce it. We reluctantly allow dual citizenship, but for some reason I'm remembering that Germany doesn't.

Um, I 'm pretty sure they are wrong about not being able to renounce it. If that is important to you, you should check with immigration.
