If you were over 18 years old with a child and you had the opportunity to get your diploma or GED because you didn't finish school for whatever reason what would you do? The independent study is full so you can go to school Monday - Saturday for GED PREP or you can pay $120 to take the GED test or you can finish High School like you are a sophmore. Which option would you choose?

I chose to put it in Parenting because I feel this is the right place because I'm a parent and I'm sure another Parent can help. Some of us found out we were pregnant and couldn't finish school either. Sorry, if anybody feels this is the wrong area. Please no negative or hateful comments.

I've already went to a vocational school and completed a medical billing course and once I finish this I'm going to do CNA and LVN and then RN. I want to work in the medical field.

I can kinda relate to your situation, just i dont have any kids. Education is the most important. Im 21 and i still dont have my diploma and i have taken the GED bout 4 times now. I would say takes classes and ace it. Alot of ppl think its easy, its really not, 5 subjects in 1 day? it gets overwhelming. If you are willing to put in the effort then do it cuz it will bite you in the butt in the end if you dont. As i said Education is VERY important. Plus you can get better jobs and also money will be better than flipping burgers. Hope i helped. Good luck and Take care

If you are over 18, you may find finishing high school starting as a sophomore to be very challenging socially; it will demand a lot of your time and everyone will be older than you and much less mature. It's probably the best bet to take the GED test.

It sounds like you're fairly smart; it always helps to take a course, but if you can't take a course due to time or enrollment constraints, you can always just study for the test on your own, pay the money, and take it. The GED is not a particularly difficult test; if you're comfortable reading and writing, you should have no trouble preparing for it on your own and passing it.

If I were you, in your situation, I would probably study on my own. YOUR BEST RESOURCE IS THE PUBLIC LIBRARY. Is there a good public library near where you live? You might do well to go to the library and see what you can find. Ask a librarian there for help if you can't find much. There are books specifically oriented towards the GED, and you might also want to get books on specific topics, sort of like reading high school text books on your own.

You may find that you can learn stuff quicker than it was covered in high school--now that you're older and more ready to learn, you won't waste any time.

If you are not good at reading or you feel you don't learn from reading, it might be best to take a course. It's all up to you: you know your own abilities better than I could. Before taking the actual GED test, you can try taking a practice test online so that you know what you're getting into--that way you don't have to risk the $120 until you're confident that you will pass.

There is a wealth of information available online about the GED test. I've included some websites as a starting point. You might also want to talk to some people you know personally who have taken the test.

Good luck!

I know $120 seems like a lot of money, but absolutely take the GED, provided you feel you are well enough educated to take it. I am not sure how far you went through school, or perhaps the last line suggests your Sophomore year, but most people who have average knowledge and have been out in the workforce for any length of time can do fairly well on this standardized test.
I can't imagine anyone would ever have a negative comment for someone who obviously has the wit to do the right thing in life to support themselves from this point on. Stick with it, no matter what you decide and keep your chin up!

Good Luck.

It depends on what you want to do with your future job/s. Will a GED be ok for what you want to do, or does the job you are interested in (now or later) on require a diploma (some employers don't have a stipulation as long as you have the GED). If you want to go on in education would the college/community college require a diploma or would a GED be ok?

What can you handle right now with your parenting demands and work demands? Where would you be most comfortable? What would give you the best opportunities/connections? Maybe create a pro/con list of each -- and see which option gives you the most "pros" --

good luck!

I think at this point you'd be better off taking the GED. Iif you have the time for education, go to community college, because once you have a college degree no one will care about your high school any more. Whether to take the GED test prep depends a lot on how much time the prep takes and whether you think you need it.

Good luck.

If you can pass the GED without prep go for that. The sooner you get your GED the sooner you can start bettering your life. It's going to be an uphill battle for awhile but hang in there and do whatever it takes to take care of your child. Don't be having any more babies until you are completely on your feet and you will probably be fine.

I say take the GED. I was in the same situation at 18 yrs, and getting my GED really boosted my esteem. You can buy study guides at Borders to help you prepare if you feel the need. Also check with your county, my classes were free and so was the test. Good luck

not only for a better job. but for good feeling of self-worth
and a good lesson for your son when he is old enough to understand.

and i say the prep because my friends had taken the GED and said there was nothing easy about it.
