i always wondered what these pockets were for..they are on the outside of each ear.

It allows the ear to bend.

I have wondered the same thing. I think it is just how the ear fold was created and has no use but if there is a use it would be interesting to learn.

It allows the great ammount of movement cat's ears have. Cats constantly move their ears so they can hear everythig that is going on around them.

When I was in college one of my physiological psychology professors informed the class that if our outer ear (the outer lobe) is blocked with a substance like peanut butter we cannot determine whether a sound is above or below us.

I imagine that that is their outer lobe.

I don't know for sure but all my cats have them. It is normal.
