It is true that St. Bernards were rescue dogs who carried brandy. Yes, the brandy was supposed to Help the people stranded in the snow. No, it doesn't keep the body from freezing in any useful way. In fact, alcohol is a depressant, and the "warm" sensation which accompanies being drunk is an illusion. You are far more likely to freeze to death with alcohol in your system than without it. People just didn't know better back then.

St Bernards originated in Switzerland , in the snow on the mountains they were kept by monks. They rescued people out there and there was BRANDY kept in the keg to help the people they rescued!

St Bernards were originally used for rescue in severely cold regions....the owners of these dogs were alcoholics so they would store their extra booze in these kegs in case their personal stash was depleted...just kidding....it was used for storing brandy for the rescued people to drink to keep their bodies from freezing as quickly.

They were originally used as rescue dogs, they searched for stranded people in snowy mountain passes. They carried a keg of brandy around their necks for the survivors to drink, because alcohol keeps your body from freezing longer.
