From that description it is hard to make a good guess about exactly what that is...

Most people will get some type of wierd thing on their feet/toes at some point in their life, especially if you are an athlete or very active and sweat a lot.

The most important thing is to make sure that it is not infected. Here are the signs of infection:

1) heat. If it is very warm around the area compared to other your other toes.

2) Color. If it is really red or pink and kind of raw looking around the area.

3) Puss. If their is any puss or other type of discharge.

4) Pain. tenderness and pain escpecially from pressure right over the area.

5) Streaks. If their are red streaks that seem to be following a blood vessel espcially if they are leading up your body towards your heart.

In addition if it is very hard right around the area it may be infected. If you have several of these symptoms and it continues to stay the same or get worse in the next 2 days then their is a real good chance it is infected.

Even if you have a slight idea that it is infected I would see your Dr. as soon as you can. The sooner you catch something like this the easier it is to resolve the issue. If it is infected and you let it go it can turn into a real serious problem.

If it is infected your Dr. will most likely drain it, and then put you on an antibiotic. (most likely Keflex, or cehpelexen). Your Dr. will probably perscribe soaking your foot in a betadine bath. You can get a bottle of betadine at any pharmacy for like 2 dollars. Just put squirt some into a bucket big enough to fit your foot in and add warm water. Leave in for about 15 minutes. This is good to do after a long day of having your feet in your socks. You can do this as many times a day that you want, but 2-3 times a day is pleanty.

If it is not infected their is a good chance that your Dr. unless its a podietrist may not know exactly what it is. It could be either a fungus or some type of viral infection. In this case they may put you on a medrol dose pack or some other similar steroid to see if that helps get rid of it.

Out of all that advice the most important piece is to see your Dr. and get the issue resolved quickly before it turns into something more severe.

GOOD LUCK!

Go get it checked out. You'll be perscribed antibiotics. This should help clear it up. If it gets worse, or you leave it go too long, then the doctor will have to cut part of your toe nail all the way down. (Believe me, it hurts! The freezing doesn't work well on infected areas.) Then you'll have to take a little time off your foot because of the throbbing pain.

It could be an ingrown toenail (which can be extremely painful!). Or it might be athlete's foot, or a combination thereof. Wash and dry it, douse the area with alcohol, and ideally see a dermatologist or a podiatrist in case the infection has set in too much.

Good luck!

You need to see a doctor to find out what is going on. It could be an infection or gout or something else but the doc needs to check it out.

did you have a shoe that rubbed it? maybe it's a wart. get some over the counter meds and try that out. if it doesn't improve in a week or so -- go see a podiatrist.
