is it to flush before you wipe or after?

Simple, it's a mid-s-h-it flush. It empties the toilets so there is room for the second half of the s-h-i-t. If it stinks, the coutesy flush minimizes the amout of matter making the smell in the first place.

If it's really bad, then there should be an end-of-the-s-h-i-t flush, then a flush after the wiping period.

If it's liquid type, an additional flush is recommended. If you used the laxitive "ColonBlo", you may need unlimited flushes.

While in a public restroom, a courtesy flush is what one does immediately after dropping some kids in the pool, even if you know you have some stragglers. After the courtesy flush, you can wipe, and flush again.

COURTESY FLUSH
Definition: The act of flushing the toilet the instant the nose cone of the poop log hits the water and the poop is whisked away to an undisclosed location. This reduces the amount of air time the poop has to stink up the bathroom. This can help you avoid being caught doing the WALK OF SHAME.

My understanding is that in the middle of going, you do a flush so that it doesn't stink up the bathroom. So you're not done, but cleaning out the toilet. Hope this answered your question. I'll be curious if there are different definitions out there.

First you courtsy (bow and bend your knees at the same time, with one foot a bit behind the other), then reach over the toilet and flush, holding your hand over your nose. There! So easy
