When you are praying about something, what makes you decide that it is something that needs prayer in addition to fasting? do you feel that unless there is fasting that the prayer will not be answered?

No, but fasting is a good practice. God deserves it.

that depends.
In Isaiah, the Lord quotes "Is this not the fast that I have chosen?"
Certain times, fast is required, adding a "stronger mix" into the prayer time.
Depending on the situation of prayer, ask the Lord what to fast from and what to pray for (and how long.)

It's important to realize that we are trapped between two worlds. This present age, and the coming of God's Kingdom (which was introduced by Jesus).

Because of this, even in Christians (some might say, especially so in Christians), there is a battle between the flesh and the spirit. Fasting is a way to remind your flesh who is in control... that you lead a spirit-controlled life and that the desires of the flesh will have no dominion over you.

Of course, I could be completely wrong here, but that's my understanding.

God commande us to fast only once a yr. You can fast and pray whenver you want to. But God commands us to fast once a yr.

Lev 16:29 And [this] shall be a statute for ever unto you: [that] in the seventh month, on the tenth [day] of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, [whether it be] one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:

In Islam we fast, during Ramadan which is one month out of the whole year. When the Quran came down to us. It makes us have rememberance of Allah Swt. During all those other months we don't fast, but Allah Swt always answers the prayers of the Muslims.

Peace be to you.

Any pressing issue. It could be the health of a loved one or finding help with a difficult financial decision. You could fast for yourself or someone else.

Listen to me, I don't care what your religion is. Fasting is bad for you and you can't open your eyes to realize it. You'll have a much better life non-religiously.
