I have been looking up at the sky and noticed that there are ALOT! of trails in the form of an X. they are not contrails from airplains because those disapate after just a few mins,where as these things hang in the air for hours at a time.I remember learning about contrails in school and also looked the word up in the dictionary.has any one else been wondering what these trails are?

I'm a pilot and I have heard this discussion many times before. They are contrails from jet engine exhaust. The trails are the result water vapor condensating in the engines and then freezing again upon exit. The time it takes for the trails to disippate depends on the air tempature, the rays of the sun, altitude, and wind currents.
Contrails may behave differently because of these varying factors.
The reason you see them cross is because the planes were headed to different destinations.

Just so you know, they are probably airplane contrails. Contrails can and do remain in the atmosphere for many many hours. Any two planes on different courses that are leaving contrails, will likely cause an X to appear overhead. You don't live near Area 51, do you?

Here is the answer to your question. Contrails hang around a long time when the conditions are right. More cirrus like clouds will form sometimes when there is enough moisture just contacting the contrails.

Forget about the trails and ponder this:
Some of the stars you're looking at don't exist any more. You're only now seeing the light they emitted before they burned out a million or two million (or whatever) years ago.
