and her bottom lip is already irritated, and the skin underneath her bottom lip is red and it looks as though blisters are appearing. I have only seen her actually suck on her lip once, (tonight) right before bed. She just started daycare and I am scared she is doing this out of nervousness. How can I get her to stop before it damages her teeth and turns into a big ordeal? I have spoken to her about how she is giving herself an "owie" and shown her the damage in the mirror. But she is only 2.. what can i do besides putting something "that tastes yucky" on her face? She also has been biting her nails to the nubbs sense she was 1.. I haven't had to cut her nails in a year and a half!

p.s. she is a very outgoing, talkative little girl and only seems insecure when being introduced to children, not adults.

help please!

I think that sucking the bottom lip is a normal phase for kids. My 4 year old daughter goes through phases where she does things like that. And being that she's recently started daycare, it might be nerves, but it probably won't last long. Try to keep chapstick on it and that will protect it and it might taste weird enough to make her stop.

Good luck!!

Sounds like she is very nervous about something.Maybe you should talk to your daycare worker see whats going on, or if there has been any time changes in the class room to make her so nervous. I would stop her from sucking on her lip asap. The only thing I would advise the the stuff that tastes nasty. You don't want her to suck her lip to where she gets sores on her lip and it sounds as if she is on her way to doing it. To be honest I really don't know what to tell you other than putting the nasty tasting stuff on lip. Again talk to teacher and see if another child is bothering her at school. Could be serious.

I think that if you just give it a little time, let her settle in to her new environment at daycare, that she will stop the lip-sucking on her own.

I'm not sure about the fingernails, since that's been going on for a while....

She is just nervous expose her more to kids and yes put some yuky stuff on also try to get her to stop when she starts more than likely she saw another kid do it and will out grow it. My daughter use to suck her arm with time around other kids she quit doing it and yes yuky stuff too.
