I am thinking about purchasing a chihuahua, 4 months old. The woman I'm buying him from originally bought him to keep her 2 year-old chi company, but the older chi just doesn't get along with the younger, so now she has to get rid of the younger. The lady said he currently weighs 2 and a half pounds. Both the puppy's parents are said to be purebred chihuahuas, mother is 4 and a half pounds (chocolate/tan longcoat), father is 3 and a half pounds (white/black short coat). When I asked about registry, the lady said that the puppy was registered with the CKC, which isn't as good as the AKC but she was only looking for pet quality, not show quality. But if both the puppy's parents were "purebred", doesn't this mean they should be AKC registered? Should I be bothered that this puppy doesn't qualify for AKC, or is it okay if I'm not planning on breeding or showing? Is the $350 asking price reasonable for this puppy?

P.S., the chihuahua has had his 2 booster shots, still needs his distemper shot, which the lady said would run us about $50. Then she said he would probably be fine without the distemper and just getting two more boosters in Jan 2008.

CKC is a bs registry that puppy mill breeders use to 'register' dogs that clearly don't qualify for AKC. The lack of AKC registry doesn't mean the parents weren't both Chis, but it means they are not closely related to well-bred or show stock, and that they might not have screened for potential health problems the way AKC dogs normally are. Overall, the question of worth is up to you. It's probably a better price than you'll find for an AKC pup from a decent breeder, but you could find the same quality pup in a newspaper for $100 without any registry. (And CKC is virtually useless, you can't use that registry for anything useful.) So the choice is yours, but I will say I wouldn't pay that much for the dog.

I might ask for a vet check too- those eyes look pretty bad for a puppy so young.

The registration alone costs more then that. Small breeds are expensive because they require SO much care to keep them alive. If she paid less the $800 or a non show quality dog then the registration is fake and/or its from a back yard breeder at best. I'm being generous here. In Quebec, if it was less the $1000 I'd say the papers were fake. If its not show quality, it might not have been registrable at all, or only with the condition that the dog never breed.

If you're Canadian, what do you care about putting it in American Shows? Both the Canadian and American kennel clubs have similar regulations and recognized breeds. And yes, if the dog was born in Canada it has to be registered with the Canadian kennel club, or with the American if it was born in the states. In neither country can you register a puppy from unregistered parents. You can do international competitions with your dog registered with either club.

There is no way anyone is taking a $500 - $1000 loss on a 4 month old puppy. Besides, if she was at all responsible it would be going back to the breeder!

You're being had into buying a milled puppy with fake papers.

Please don't buy this dog.

This is my question to you.. Do you want to show the puppy? or are you looking for a pet? if the dog and the parents look purebred and you want it as a pet, Then what is the difference on the papers? As far as just puppy mills using CKC for their dogs, some people have purchased purebreds with LIMITED AKC Papers, and bred them anyways, (because the dog did not go to a show home they have spay and neuter contract) They decided to breed them anyways, and needed to get papers, they can go through CKC (Contiental kennel club) APRI (american Pet registry) it is NOT JUST FOR PUPPY Mills.. My thing is, DO YOU LIKE THE DOG? DO YOU FEEL IT IS WORTH 350? And any dog/puppy you get you should take to the vet for a once over and update shots either way.

Both parents have to be AKC, and I imagine that it's the same way for CKC. I don't believe the CKC would register a mixed dog, such as a Chi/Pom mix. So what you would have would be more mutts. So no, they couldn't be registered with either registry. Okay, I'm going to add to this post. I thought that you were talking about the Canadian Kennel Club. The Continental Kennel club isn't worth cr@p, they will registered ANYTHING.

Purebred doesn't meen AKC, and if you get right down to it, AKC doesn't allways meen purebred. AKC is "best" but it's not hard for registered breeders to get their hands on extra registrations slips for puppies that might not even look the part. CKC can be just as good, but simply won't be able to paricipate in the AKC shows. So what? If you're looking for a pet, $350 is a fine price. There are allways BYBs selling mixes *everything from chi-minpin mixes to wolf hybrids* out by wal-mart in Lake City for upwards of fourhundred. Go for it, because conformation only matters if you plan to compete.

EDIT
I just looked at his pics, and my god is he a beauty. His eyes look a bit watery/runny, so get him to a vet ASAP. Could be nothing, could be an infection that could get worse. Don't take chances.

Hi, CKC (Continental or Canadian Kennel Club) Which one is it? Canadian is 2x better, btw, all purebred puppies ARENT akc registers. Who knows if its purebred or not. But if its Continental Kennel club , 350 i guess is a fair price. Anyway, I wouldn't breed it, I hope you have a nice dog!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aUMwh

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.
