Okay before i continue let me say this. I dont care for people how this is bad and so on.

Now this is a 'hypothetical' situation:
Lets say my friend, Bob Finkle, went online to see the status of his Financial aid. Upon putting in his SS number, he discovers he is ALSO enrolled into a top 10 university. According to this, this SS is also enrolled into a university he would like to go to. He did a student search on the universities website, and his name didnt show up. This means some one else is just using his SS number.

Now this is ID theft. BUt 'Bob' has a better idea. Instead of calling the school and informing them of this error, would there be any way that Bob could use this to his advantage to getting in?

Since his SS is already in the system, would there be any way to systematically change all the info to his own, so he is now enrolled, or any other ways to use this 'unfortuneate' event to his liking?

Remeber, i dont neeed to hear your complaints. THis is ummmm hypothetical.

Yeah well bobs currently go to that fall back school with a 3.0. Transfers to Cal need atleast 3.5.

Now, i know there is an error some where. It wouldnt be american if i just let this oppurtinity let him by.

What would be easier? Saying hey im bob, this is my SS. What do you mean that SS isnt under my name? are you kidding? Heres my lisense and Birth cirtificate. ect...

But then again bob could get into some trouble.

What this i hear about lawsuit? Bobs a college student and really cant have his permenent record being harmed. It could mean alot of trouble.

Bob has had alot of oddities in the past with records ect... Example. His DUI has dissapered from record. He did nothing to cause this to happen. He had a drunk in public ticket and they said he had no priors. Very odd.

i dont think that would work. there are too many unknowns involved. you dont know who is using the ssn. other people do know that person, and when bob shows up there could be problems.

Bob would almost need a college amount of knowledge to hack a universities' system. I think Bob should tell them that he was enrolled and this poser changed the information. Or Bob could sue the school for not catching the error for anywhere between 50-200 thousand dollars. Or Bob could do both.

No, because, in the long run, I'm sure the school you...uhhh..."Bob" wants to go to has other identifying information on file. Aside from that, wouldn't it be better if "Bob" went to another school for a semester, then tried transferring into his first choice school? This could be a snap if he busted his butt to get amazingly good grades at his fall-back school. Besides, I bet Bob is a really nice guy, who wants to get into school based solely on his own merits, and not a SSN screw-up.
