Breed Specific Legislation. For those who don't know what it is, it regulates what breeds can and can't live in certain cities and such. The main targets are pit bulls, GSDs, Dobermans, and Rottweilers. I've also heard of places saying any dog over 100 lbs can't live there. It's supposed to lower problems with vicious dogs and dog fighting. I don't think it works because I know of one place in particular that had a lower dog fighting problem before they instated BSL. I also think it's stupid because responsible people are going to follow the law, and those who actually fight the dogs and such will just keep them there on the black market.

It's crazy. My neighbor's Westie mix would bite you before one of our German shepherds. What makes them think the people who don't take proper care of their dogs now are going to change their ways? I live near one of the largest cities in the country, and 99% of the dogs involved in these attacks aren't even vaccinated. You're right! The responsible people who follow the law are the ones who are penalized, because they vaccinate, exercise, feed, house and care for their pets properly. Being responsible with our animals usually means being responsible in other areas of our lives. People own homes and need insurance but have trouble with insurance companies because of irresponsible dog owners. The insurance companies are trying to cover their butts because of potential lawsuits. I can't blame them. Ironically, the idiots who don't care for their dogs and are usually causing the problem don't even OWN a home. They don't even own a proper collar or leash (tow chains for chaining dogs up don't count, by the way). They literally have nothing to lose but the dog. Or, they have made a business out of fighting dogs and have enough money to buy their way out of their legal problems. Who loses in the end? The victim who is attacked by an unsocialized, untrained dog, and the dog itself, who is ultimately destroyed.

When a poor dog is kept chained in a back yard or kept in a dark basement, unvaccinated, not housebroken, trained only to be aggressive gets loose and mauls someone, suddenly every dog is to blame. I'm not naive enough to trust every pitbull, rottweiler or German shepherd, or any other dog who comes through the door. There are certain breeds I would honestly never own or trust.

It boils down to some people shouldn't own dogs. Heck, some people shouldn't even have kids for that matter.

BSL is nothing but the government coming up with a new way to tell us what to do. BSL is probably an idea PETA came up with. They claim it will put an end to aggressive dogs but that is definitely BS because the thugs and idiots who use dogs illegally will just move on to a different breed I do not believe they care about the laws or what laws they break. What happens next is the government adds more breeds to the list and next thing you know no one will be able to own a dog. Right now in Italy 92 breeds are deemed dangerous and unfortunately we are heading in the same direction. Maybe one day we will be visiting dogs in the zoo. I have German Shepherd Dogs and both of my dogs are registered with Therapy Dog International so we visit hospitals and nursing homes regularly. If the govenment is successful with their campaign of BSL how do I continue visiting hospitals and nursing homes. Something tells me I will not be welcome with dogs that have to be muzzled and that have bright orange tags on their collars that read DANGEROUS DOG. There are laws in place now that punish aggressive dogs tthe problem is nobody enforces the laws.

I agree: weither there's a law in place or not, irresponsible dog owners are going to keep doing what they are doing: responsible dog owner are the ones that should be able to have dogs like pitbulls, etc. because they will raise them right. I have met a lot of pitbulls, rottweilers that are the sweetest dogs! those laws aren't fair to us who dont abuse dogs or use them for fighting, etc.
