I'm interested in two things. What was in their field pack? What rules were enforced about hanging on to battle souvineirs like German lugers and Hitler Youth Knives? Or if you wanted a machete and were not specifically assigned one could you carry a personal one? Stuff like that.

If it matters I'm wondering specifically about Operation Torch in North Africa.

This isn't a homework question. I haven't been to graduate school in almost ten years. But it is a question with a lot of contradictions on line and I was hoping for some first hand knowledge.

not sure about the field pack, but i know for a fact from my grandfather you were threatened to be demoted and fined if you brought anything back, of couse from my source who was the first one on the boat to leave? he was and nobody even checked his bag.. haha so you technically were not allowed but im sure many got away with it
