Every Wednesdays I go and volunteer at a school for the entire day. This week, I will be unable to go because I'm feeling sick and I'm finding it difficult to stand straight without getting a pounding headache. Anyways, one of the teachers from the school e-mailed me today and asked me to substitute for her because she was sick but then I told her I will be unable to do it because I'm also sick. Shuold I feel bad for not being able to help her?

No breech of etiquette there. If anything, etiquette states that the other teacher should have mailed you that request, rather than email! lol! But feel bad because you're too sick to fill in for another sick person? -No way. The other teacher probably is paid, right? And she's taking sick leave, which she gets with pay. You, on the other hand, are a volunteer, and getting no pay either way. She's just going to have to find another sub, that's all. It's not as if she can fire you! There's nothing wrong with looking out for your own health, and going in anyway could jeopardize the health of the students. You're doing the right thing in turning her down on that.

No, you should not feel bad. It is generous of you to volunteer every week and being sick is not something that you can control and your reason for not being able to help her is unselfish. Besides, if you are sick and you go to the school you could make other people sick as well.

No. If you are legitimately sick it's not bad to turn it down. It seems like you are a pretty responsible person if you do regular volunteering. Plus, you probably wouldn't do a very good job, and you could potentially pass the illness to others. They can find another substitute.

Don't feel bad! You are sick. You are such a wonderful person to volunteer your time. You can't help that you have a headache. You will be back when you can. Surely the teacher realizes that. I am sure that she appreciates all your work, if not then you really aren't appreciated as much as you deserve.

Hope you feel better soon.

As long as you notified the school in time, I do not think it is bad etiquette. By calling out sick you helped to control the spread of a virus.

You are already sick, don't add unnecessary guilt. You won't be much good to anyone if you are sick, and no one will care what a trooper you are if you go in while sick. Stay home, drink some chicken soup, and get well. No guilt.

If you're sick and she's sick, who's to judge who is sick-ER. You have every right to stay home. Remember, you're a volunteer. You're volunteering, not playing hooky from your job to go fishing. Stay home and take care of yourself. Those children don't want what you got. You want to faint or something in front of them? RELAX...

You have to take care of yourself first!!! Plus you'll get everyone else sick too. You did the right thing and it's definitely not bad etiquette. They must love you there if they email you directly.

No. Why would you feel bad if you're sick? You wouldn't want to spread your germs around the classroom and make the children sick would you?

Since it's only volunteer work, I wouldn't feel too bad. Plus it's not like you bail out on them all the time.
