No, if you have had this for several days and nothing is helping, a trip to the doctor is in order. You need a throat culture and exam, as you may have strep throat and that needs antibiotics. The lump in your neck is an enlarged/inflammed lymph node, and it's not unusual to see that in strep throat. It's a sign the immune system is on alert, and actually a good sign because it means you have a healthy immune system. But, prepare yourself for a long wait, because it isn't life threatening so you will be way down on the list of priorities. If you go early in the am or late at night, it will be a shorter wait as a rule.

I would definitely go see a doctor. You can go to the ER especially if it is after hours for doctors. You can go to your local health department during normal business hours. Also if you live in a city with a teaching university that would be another option. But do go see a doctor. In the meantime you could try gargling with warm salt water. Good luck

It is never stupid to consult a doctor. They are professionals and will be able to diagnose right. But you can try out some home remedies. Sore throat is usually due to a viral infection . Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. More details and home remedies available at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

You don't have the money to go to your family doctor, but the money to go to the ER? That's probably three times as expensive?

Why don't you try to find a walk-in clinic or urgent care clinic, and leave the ER as the LAST resort.
