Check System properties (in control panel).. go into the Hardware tab and click on the button that says "Device Manager"
Scroll through there to see if there is an audio device listed, or a item with a "!" yellow caution icon. If there is, you just need to reload the drivers for that device and you should be ok.
If you do not see your device listed, nor a "!" icon, you may very well not have an audio device on your computer

Do you have audio speakers attached?
Go to devive manager and look to see if you have sound devices.
Check the volume control > control panel, if you recently downloaded an update from microsoft you need to turn off your pc and restart. This should fix it. I had the same problem yesterday after a download. =o) Good Luck..

It may sound goofy, but did you check to be sure they were plugged into the electrical outlet?
I had that happen once...I had accidentally unplugged them from the wall and thought it was something else.
If they are plugged in everywhere they're supposed to, and nothing else seems to work, you may have to get a new sound card...Best Buy, Circuit City or any other compu-store will have one.
Good luck.

Right click on "My Computer" select Manage and go to device manager. Look for any device with a question mark. Clicking on it might give you the model number and the manufacturer.
