If we were created 6000 years ago, or intelligently designed, what is the purpose of body hair? It's too thin to provide warmth, and if you're hairy like me, it gets irritated when clothing rubs on it. Many people shave it off anyway.

So, what do you think is the purpose of body hair?

Protection is one of the major functions of body hair. Hair on the head can protect from the sun, heat and cold. eye lashes are to prevent particles going into your eyes, thus causing you to blink (a simple reflex) to prevent from more dirt etc. to flying in. Underarm hair, you can say, is a dry lubricant (The same goes for pubic hair, lol) When you're cold you get goosebumps, the raising of hair allows to capture heat in to the body. Hair in general can serve as a sensory receptor.

It's a secondary sex characteristic, and an evolutionary leftover. Early men were very hairy, indeed. As men evolved, and found artificial means to stay warm (fire, clothing, shelter) the need for body hair lessened. No one really knows why some people are more hirsute than others; it's just differences in hormone levels and race. Although it's strange how Siberian Russians and Inuits of Alaska have almost no body hair, but live in hideously cold climates. Maybe Mother Nature has a sense of humor.

Same purpose as appendix, nipples on men and lawyers. No benefit at all.
Why were we designed with a belly button when obviously the first model did not have a mother for it to be attached to.
If we are made in the image of God does he have a belly button?
Some questions are just too big.

Our ancestors needed it in a thinker coat. It does give us a place to sweat too, but you could have really thin ones for that.
