yesterday i shot an 80 at a championship level golf course (arizona country club:home of the phoenix open before they moved it to the stadium course) i am a freshman at high school and was wondering if that is the type of game that can compete with kids who are posting 74's and 75's (sometimes better). also, my high school won state this past year.My dad was on his golf team in high school and says i would make it. im just trying to get a better understanding of where i stand and if i can compete. Any expert advice? Thanks

The question is do YOU think you can do it? Shooting 80 is great and all, but there is way more to it. Are you the type of person who meets a challenge head on, or do you look for an easy out. You have to realize that golf is a very tough sport, and there are going to be days that it kicks you ***, but if you have the right mindset, you should be able to get past it and play well. That is what separates the elite pro from a good player. I have a lot of guys come to my range who shot scratch or under, but they lack the mental toughness and consistency. When they have a bad first couple of holes they quit in their minds. Pros on the other hand can rebound and play a good game after a few mistakes. So like I said do YOU think you have what it takes, only you'll know for sure.

Well you and me are around the same level of competition. I live in both Arizona (paradise valley) and California (East of SF). I go to school at De La Salle High School in Cali. My golf team won the California State Championship last year. Generally on our team it takes even par or better, but if you are consitently breaking 80 and on a bad day shoot a 82-83 you should make the team fairly easy. Arizona CC is not an easy course. If you want to compare yourself with the players on the team to see where you stand, go to a course that isnt super difficult but challenging,Tatum Ranch or Arrowhead and bet them a little money. This will assure you are playing with your best game against theirs. Also, dont be nervous at tryouts. Past team members are always cocky during tryouts and it is sorta easy to beat them. If you beat them in tryouts, then the coach cant turn you down!!! Good luck with making the team and holding your state title

Don't try to beat your opponents, force them to beat themselves by playing consistent golf. When they KNOW if they screw up a shot (and you don't) that it's going to put them behind an 8ball or possibly cost them a stroke or two, you've gotten "inside their head" and they're ripe for the pickin. The key is for you to play YOUR game... "tee's and greens" as Tin Cup McAvoy said. A Par 4 can be made by 2 shots and 2 putts OR 3 shots and 1 putt... a 4 is a 4. Let them swing for the fences off the tee box; it's not "how far", it's "how many".

Just remember Danny Noonan from Caddyshack. He didn't consider himself any type of golfer, but he won the caddy tournament.

You'll be fine. Just make sure you practice x-tra hard the day before tryouts and get plenty of sleep.

Go for it. Your HS coach would be the best source, sound like you've got what it takes!
