If you are here (in Korea) teaching on an E2 Visa (for English Teachers) and it has expired....better get out before they kick you out. Can you turn around and come back in ? You will be hassled at immigration upon re entry because it will be obvious from your passport that your previous visa expired and that you are now trying to come in on a tourist visa (I assume). Also, why would you go to the American Embassy with questions regarding a Korean Visa - go to the Korean Authorities or ask your employer to help you figure things out. Regardless, you must leave the country in order to re enter as a tourist or with any other newly issued Visa. American tourists are granted a 30 day tourist visa upon arrival. If immigration thinks you are coming back into the country to work illegally, they can turn you around at the airport and stamp your passport making it impossible to ever return to Korea. Why on earth would you let you Visa expire ???!!!!

I agree with the previous answer: why did you let the visa expire? You should wait a while after departure from Korea before returning (maybe stay in Japan a week or so). By the way, Korean authorities are getting pickier about the 30 days for a tourist from the U.S. without a visa - my wife (US citizen but from Korea) was leaving on Day 31 and had quite a time getting it worked out.

Better go to the American embassy and ask them. They'll tell you exactly where you stand on the issue. In Europe, if you stay over six months, you need a visa. In Korea, not sure.
